IRA MANDELA SIOBHAN

MOVEMENT DIRECTOR & CHOREOGRAPHER

Hey, I’m Ira - I'm a choreographer, movement director, actor and dancer. I have spent almost 20 years working with companies such as DV8, Punchdrunk, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Akram Khan Dance Company, The National Theatre and The Globe Theatre.

As a performer, some of my career highlights have been embodying Nugget in Ned Bennet’s production of Equus in the West End, creating the original Maugrim the wolf in Sally Cookson’s The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as well as playing the young Queen's love interest in Netflix's The Crown. I had the honour of working with Greta Gerwig on Barbie, when I played one of the Ken's and was also involved in the development of the movement sequences.

As a movement director, I had the privilege of working with Carrie Cracknell and an incredible cast of 27 for The National Theatre's The Grapes of Wrath. I also had the pleasure of being movement director on Strike! at The Southwark Playhouse, Manic Street Creature (Southwark Playhouse), Addictive Beat (Boundless Theatre) and 16 Postcodes by Jessica Regan. I was also associate movement director on Mlima's Tale at The Kiln Theatre.

Would you like the techniques to portray any animal with integrity and individuality?

• Take part whenever and wherever suits you, going at your own pace. No need for a huge space to join the masterclass; it can be adjusted to fit the space you're in.

• Feel free to go back to the episodes whenever you want. With a year's access, watch them as many times as you'd like. This gives you the chance to thoroughly explore the art of embodying animals.

• Learn Ira Mandela's process in a playful, safe and creative space.

• By the end you will have the techniques to play any animal with depth and integrity, avoiding any caricature. Enabling you to bring something unique to any rehearsal space you enter or character you play.

I like to bring a cohesive, collaborative and nurturing atmosphere to the rehearsal room, whilst also bringing out the best of the performers I work with by helping them to go beyond their usual limits.

I like to push boundaries with my work, whilst always ensuring that the movement and choreography serves the story as well as the directors vision.
